Jardine Lloyd Thompson Asia Pte Ltd bags SBR International Business Awards for Insurance Broker

JLT University allows easier employee training.

Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) Asia Pte Ltd , a subsidiary of the JLT Group, is a market leader in insurance and reinsurance broking, risk consultancy, and employee benefits services.Withmore

With more than 1,800 employees in 14 countries and territories across Asia, JLT Asia's technical abilities and knowledge span a wide range of specialist areas. Its team of insurance specialists is renowned for their innovative approach to developing integrated insurance, reinsurance and alternative risk transfer solutions to meet the complex risks inherent in Asia.

Organisations face difficulties in training their employees — a task magnified when its offices are spread across Asia. JLT Asia has responded to the challenge by launching the JLT University (JLTU) in March 2017. Unlike other development arms of organisations, JLTU does not sit within JLT Asia’s HR department. Instead, it underpins the entire organisation by collaborating with business units to facilitate learning. For this project, JLT Asia won Singapore Business Review's International Business Award for Insurance Broker.

Training under JLTU aims to develop and deepen people’s expertise. It also aims to be an efficient solution and has to be structured and scalable. The training also looks to remain relevant and constantly value-add at all levels of an employee’s development.

Four faculties were created for JLTU's holistic training curriculum. Each faculty has a member of JLT’s senior management as its Dean, so that JLTU is supported and sponsored by key decision-makers. These include Technical Insurance to ensure JLT is capable of providing advice to clients and have sound knowledge of products, solutions and insurance markets; Sales to impart a structured sales process along with techniques and tools to convert opportunity to wins, prospects to clients; Management and Leadership to equip new managers and leaders with the know-how and personal awareness of their management styles; and Personal Development to help employees become more confident and effective regardless of job function. Each faculty has three levels of learning: foundation level, intermediate level, and advanced level.

To address scalability, especially at the Foundation level, JLTU turned to digital learning. Using SmartUp, a digital learning platform provider, JLTU delivered their foundation learning content uniquely created in-house by the business, for the business.

The SBR International Business Awards was held on May 17, 2018 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore.

This year's nominations were judged by a panel consisting of Ng Jiak See, executive director and head of corporate finance advisory at Deloitte Singapore & Southeast Asia; Choo Eng Chuan, ASEAN markets leader and partner, international and corporate tax services at Ernst & Young Solutions LLP; Toh Kim Teck, assurance partner at Foo Kon Tan LLP; and Henry Tan, managing director at NEXIA TS.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
