F&B sales stall in May

Restaurants grew, but declines elsewhere kept overall turnover unchanged.

Singapore's food and beverage (F&B) services sales were unchanged in May from a year earlier after edging up 0.1% in April, according to the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat).

On a seasonally adjusted basis, F&B sales declined 0.6% from April.

Total F&B sales were estimated at $1.7b in May, with online transactions accounting for 19.8% of sales. This is slightly below the 19.9% recorded in April.

Restaurants posted 1.8% year-on-year growth, whilst fast food outlets and food caterers recorded increases of 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively.

Food courts and other eating places registered the largest decline, with sales falling 5.3% from a year earlier whilst café sales also slipped 0.5%.

Compared with April, seasonally adjusted sales fell across most segments.

Fast food outlets declined 3.7%, food caterers fell 2.8%, and food courts and other eating places slipped 1.1% with restaurants and cafés the only segments to record monthly growth.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
