Microsoft launches first Southeast Asia lab with AI focus

The move is aimed at deepening the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) research, industry collaboration, and talent development efforts.

Microsoft has launched a new research facility under its Microsoft Research Asia division in Singapore, marking the company’s first such lab in Southeast Asia.

The move is aimed at deepening the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) research, industry collaboration, and talent development efforts in the region.

The establishment of the lab is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and expands Microsoft’s global research network.

According to a media statement issued by Edelman, the lab will act as a strategic hub to drive AI initiatives with a focus on foundational research, responsible deployment, and socially beneficial applications.

The lab plans to collaborate with local institutions and apply advanced AI across sectors such as healthcare, finance, and logistics.

Notably, it will work with SingHealth to promote precision health, and with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to explore embodied AI.

Efforts will also include developing AI systems tailored to Southeast Asia’s cultural and societal contexts.

Microsoft also emphasized the lab’s role in cultivating local talent, with partnerships involving NUS, NTU, and the Singapore Management University (SMU) to provide students and researchers with hands-on experience in AI development.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
