Markel Insurance names Kevin Leung as SEA managing director

Recruitment for a replacement APAC chief underwriting officer is underway.

Markel Insurance has appointed Kevin Leung as managing director for its Southeast Asia operations.

He is responsible for overseeing operations in both Singapore and Malaysia, Markel Insurance said in a 29 September 2026 announcement.

In his new role, Leung brings 28 years of experience working in the insurance industry. He joined Merkel as chief underwriting officer for Asia Pacific in 2023. Recruitment for Leung’s successor is underway.

Prior to joining Merkel, Leung worked at Swiss Re, Catlin, ACE Group, and AIG.

Jasminder Kaur will remain country head of Malaysia, retaining responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Malaysia business.

The appointment comes in the heels of Markel’s decision to unify its Singapore and Malaysia operations under a unified Southeast Asia structure.

Bringing together the two countries’ operations gives Markel a more connected and coordinated platform, said Sucheng Chang, managing director for Asia Pacific.

“It allows us to deploy underwriting expertise more effectively across the region and gives clients and brokers clearer market ownership and more streamlined decision-making,” Chang said.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
