Grab buys 60% stake in Atome Financial for $1.9b

It also agreed to acquire the remaining 40% stake by Q3 2029 at the earliest.

Grab Holdings is acquiring a 60% majority stake in Atome Financial for nearly $1.9b (US$1.49b).

Grab will pay in cash for the controlling equity interest, with the transaction expected to be completed by Q3 2027.

Grab has also agreed with AIGL and other sellers to acquire the remaining 40% equity interest in Atome Financial approximately two years after the completion of the transaction, or by Q3 2029 at the earliest.

At least 50% of the future 40% stake acquisition will be settled by cash, Grab said in a statement on 15 September. The resulting valuation has a floor of about US$2b and a cap of US$4.5b.

The proposed transaction will combine Atome Financial’s business—which spans buy now pay later (BNPL) loans, consumer cash loans, BNPL cards, and digital lending—with Grab’s financial services business.

Following completion of the transaction, Grab said that it will financially consolidate Atome Financial into its financial services segment and Atome Financial’s management team will continue to drive the growth of the Atome Financial business.

Atome Financial operates in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, and has served 25 million cumulative transacted users, according to Grab, based on Atome’s personal management accounts.

Grab expects that through Atome Financial, it would be able to access a scaled and proven platform for consumer lending.

In 2025, Grab said that 68% of its driver-partner borrowers accessed formal credit for the first time through the Grab platform.

Grab expects to enhance its credit risk underwriting capabilities and faster loan book growth by pairing its ecosystem insights with Atome Financial AI’s powered lending infrastructure.

Grab and Atome said that they plan to share risk-management insights, regulatory best practices, and collection strategies.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
