Singapore will focus on these 3 areas for aviation's recovery

These were discussed during the Singapore Aerospace Technology Leadership Forum.

Digital services, autonomy, and sustainability were announced as areas of focus for the aviation industry by Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Tan See Leng, during the Singapore Aerospace Technology Leadership Forum.

Digitalising aircraft, engines, and components present opportunities in the collected data to optimise flight operations, workflow management, and intelligent systems health monitoring, Tan said.

As an example, he cited the digital aviation corporate laboratory launched in January 2022 by Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). The program will allow SIA to partner with NUS in the push for traveller-centric digital services, as well as safety and security in air travel.

The second pillar in Tan's speech is autonomy—how it could enhance pilot decision-making, reliability and safety. "Building off a Singapore Aerospace Programme project, A*STAR has gone on to collaborate with our local enterprises to develop a Smart Autonomous Aircraft Visual Inspection System, which will feature artificial intelligence capabilities for the detection of defects and flexible deployment on an autonomous platform," he said.

"The third is sustainability. There is a growing interest in the aerospace industry as companies work together to reduce aviation’s impact on the environment, and one of the approaches is to explore alternative energy systems such as electric propulsion," Tan added.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
