Singapore’s $75m fund targets cheaper hydrogen and solar for power

The backing runs from laboratory work through to pilots of more mature solutions.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority and the Advanced Energy and Decarbonisation Office have launched a $75m funding initiative to advance power decarbonisation technologies.

It will support laboratory research into emerging low-carbon technologies, as well as the testing and piloting of more mature solutions, the groups said.

The initiative will focus on hydrogen, solar, and biomass, supporting technologies to enable power plants to switch from hydrogen-based to backup fuels within 10 minutes, improve hydrogen infrastructure safety, and lower hydrogen costs.

Solar projects will develop lower-cost structural systems for panels on unconventional surfaces, targeting at least 15% savings without compromising strength or waterproofing.

They will also develop high-efficiency photovoltaic modules exceeding 30% efficiency, or lightweight, flexible modules designed to last at least 25 years with annual degradation below 1%.

Biomass projects will develop technologies costing less than $50 per tonne to convert ash from different feedstocks into useful products that meet Singapore’s environmental and end-use requirements.

The initiative is part of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2030 $800m Decarbonisation Grand Challenge announced in March 2026.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
