Tuas Power secures 670-MW gas unit
The facility is expected to begin commercial operations by December 2031.
Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) has awarded Tuas Power Generation Pte Ltd (Tuas Power) the right to build, own, and operate a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generating unit, the authority announced on 20 August.
This follows an RFP launched by EMA in April under its centralised process for new generation capacity to ensure sufficient power generation capacity to meet Singapore’s future electricity needs.
Tuas Power’s CCGT is expected to provide 670 megawatts of power generation capacity and be ready for commercial operations by December 2031.
“These CCGTs powered by natural gas will provide reliable baseload power, whilst we pursue diverse pathways to a cleaner energy future,” said Puah Kok Keong, CEO of EMA.
Singapore’s electricity demand is projected to grow by 2.4% to 4.8% annually over the next decade, according to EMA.
By 2031, peak electricity demand is projected to reach between 9.6 gigawatts (GW) and 11.4 GW, the authority said.
Demand will be driven by strong economic growth, transport electrification, and the expansion of energy-intensive sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.
The installed capacity could meet the electricity demand of up to about 1.2 million four-room HDB households annually, according to EMA.
