Google Business Profile vs Website SEO

For a Singapore business with a physical location or a defined service area, these two compete for the same budget and produce very different results.

The short answer: if you serve customers locally and you have not claimed and optimised your Google Business Profile, do that first. It is faster, cheaper, and for local-intent searches it occupies more of the screen than any organic result.

The longer answer is that they do different jobs, and which matters more depends on what your customers actually search for. Here is how to tell.

They answer different searches

This is the whole distinction, and it is worth being precise about it.

Google Business Profile controls how you appear in the map pack, in Google Maps, and in the knowledge panel on the right of the results page. It wins searches with local intent: “near me”, a service plus a location, or a direct search for your business name.

Website SEO controls how your pages rank in the ordinary organic results. It wins searches where the user wants information, comparison, or a supplier they have not chosen by location.

Search

Who wins it

“aircon servicing near me”

Business Profile, almost entirely

“aircon servicing tampines”

Business Profile first, website below

“how often should I service my aircon”

Website

“best aircon servicing company singapore”

Website, usually a listicle

“aircon chemical wash cost”

Website

“[your company name]”

Business Profile panel, plus your site

Read that table against your own customers. If most of what they search looks like the first two rows, your Business Profile is the priority. If it looks like rows three to five, your website is.

Why Business Profile usually comes first

Four reasons, and they are practical rather than theoretical.

It is faster. A well-completed profile can appear in the map pack within weeks. Organic rankings for a competitive commercial term take months.

It occupies more screen. On a phone, the map pack sits above the organic results. Position one organically can still be below three competitors in the pack.

It is free. Claiming and optimising costs time, not budget. Website SEO costs either your time or an agency’s.

It converts directly. A profile offers call, directions and website buttons. Someone can become a customer without visiting your site at all.

That last point is also the catch, covered below.

Why the website still matters

Three reasons Business Profile alone is not a strategy.

Your website feeds your profile’s rankings. Google’s local ranking factors draw on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence is influenced by your wider web presence, including your site. A profile attached to a thin or absent website is at a disadvantage against a competitor with both.

Business Profile cannot answer questions. Someone comparing options, researching costs or deciding between approaches needs content. A profile has no room for that, and those searches are often where the higher-value customers start.

You do not own it. Google can suspend a profile, merge it, or change the format. Your website is the asset you control. Building a business entirely on a platform you do not own is a risk worth naming.

And for anything researched rather than located, Business Profile does not appear at all. A B2B supplier whose buyers search by capability rather than by proximity gets little from the map pack.

How to decide for your business

Four questions. The answers point clearly in one direction or the other.

1. Do customers come to you, or do you go to them, or neither? Physical premises or a defined service area means local intent is real. Profile first. Neither means the map pack rarely shows, so the website carries the work.

2. What do your customers actually type? Check Search Console for existing queries, and check the Business Profile insights for the searches that found your listing. If the second list is longer, you have your answer.

3. How competitive is the map pack in your area? Search your main service plus your location on a phone. If the pack shows three competitors with hundreds of reviews each, catching up takes time. If it shows incomplete profiles with few reviews, the opportunity is immediate.

4. Is your sales cycle short or considered? Short and local, such as a repair or a meal, favours the profile. Long and considered, such as a six-figure build, favours content, because nobody picks that supplier from a map.

The realistic answer for most Singapore SMEs

Both, sequenced.

Weeks one to four: the profile. Claim it, verify it, complete every field, choose accurate categories, add real photographs, and start requesting reviews from recent customers. This is the highest return per hour available in local marketing, and most businesses have left half the fields empty. Our Google Business Profile optimisation checklist covers the full field list.

From month one onward: the website. Location and service pages that match what people search, plus the informational content that captures research-stage buyers. This compounds over quarters rather than weeks.

The two reinforce each other. Consistent name, address and phone number across your site and profile strengthens both. Service pages give your profile relevant content to be associated with. Reviews mentioning specific services help the profile rank for those services.

The mistake to avoid in each direction

Treating the profile as set-and-forget. A profile claimed two years ago with no posts, no new photographs and no recent reviews declines against competitors who are active. It needs maintenance, not just setup.

Treating the website as a brochure. A site with one page per service and no content answering customer questions will not rank for anything except your business name. The profile cannot compensate for that on research-stage searches.

Letting the two disagree. Different opening hours, a different phone number, an old address on one and not the other. Inconsistency undermines both, and it is the most common technical issue we find in local audits.

Frequently asked questions

Should I optimise my Google Business Profile or my website first?

If you serve customers locally and have not fully optimised your profile, do that first. It produces results in weeks rather than months, costs nothing but time, and occupies more screen space than organic results for local-intent searches. Website SEO should start in parallel because it compounds over a longer period.

Does my Google Business Profile affect my website’s rankings?

Not directly, but they are connected. Local ranking depends partly on prominence, which your wider web presence including your site contributes to. A strong website supports your profile’s local rankings, and consistent business information across both strengthens each.

Can I rank locally without a website?

You can appear in the map pack, and some businesses get enquiries that way. It is a weak position: you cannot answer research-stage questions, you have no asset you control, and you compete at a disadvantage against businesses with both. Google can also suspend or change a profile at any time.

Which gets more clicks, the map pack or organic results?

For searches with clear local intent, the map pack typically gets the larger share, because it sits above organic results and offers call and directions buttons directly. For informational and comparison searches, the map pack often does not appear at all.

How long does Google Business Profile optimisation take to work?

A completed and verified profile can start appearing in local results within weeks. Review velocity and consistent activity improve position over the following months. This is considerably faster than organic rankings for competitive commercial terms.

Do I need both if I am a B2B company?

It depends on whether buyers search by location. A B2B supplier chosen on capability rather than proximity gets limited value from the map pack, so the website carries most of the work. A profile is still worth completing because it appears when someone searches your business name.

What is the most common Google Business Profile mistake?

Claiming it, completing it once, and leaving it. Profiles with no recent reviews, no new photographs and no posts decline against active competitors. The second most common is inconsistent business information between the profile and the website.

Does Google Business Profile help with AI search?

Indirectly. Assistants draw on consistent business information across the web when answering questions about local suppliers, and an accurate, well-maintained profile is part of that consistency. It is not a substitute for the content work covered in GEO versus SEO.

Where to start this week

Open your Business Profile and count the empty fields. Most businesses find several, and filling them is an afternoon’s work with a direct effect on local visibility.

Then look at your last ten customers and ask how they found you. If most searched a service plus a location, the profile is your priority. If most were researching before they chose, the website is.

We handle both, with Google Business Profile setup and local SEO on one side and SEO services on the other. For the ranking factors behind the map pack, see Google’s local search algorithm.
