Interview with MoneyFM 89.3; Should Companies Axe the Executive Chairman?

Our Managing Director, Mr Mark Lee, was invited to engage in a live televised debate on MONEY FM 89.3, Singapore’s first and only Business and Personal Finance radio station, on the topic of whether companies should do away with the role of executive chairman.

Does the executive chairman role bridge board oversight and management during transitions? Or does it create a conflict of interest, blur accountability, and weaken corporate governance?

The debate traversed issues of board compositions, the functions of an executive versus non-executive chairman, corporate governance, and shareholder expectations.

Ultimately, Mr Mark Lee opined that an executive chairman role may potentially retain a positive impact for the company if the role sets out to facilitate succession, ensures no crashing of gears during transitions, and encourages rejuvenation within the company.

The key to a company’s success, in Mr Mark Lee’s view, is not determined by an office or role, but the cultivation of a corporate eco-system that attracts and retains talent through fair and open employment practices and incentives.
