Hear a Mother’s Story of Hope at BMDP’s World Leukaemia Day Event
Every parent dreams of watching their child grow up healthy and carefree. For Sonia, that dream was shattered when her four-year-old daughter, Sara, was diagnosed with severe aplastic anaemia — a rare and life-threatening condition where the bone marrow stops producing blood cells. What began as a few unexplained bruises quickly turned into a fight for survival.
Sara urgently needed a bone marrow transplant, but her younger brother was not a match. With only a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a suitable unrelated donor, the odds were stacked against her. Yet hope arrived. Through the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP), a stranger stepped forward. In November 2024, Sara received her transplant — a tiny 60ml bag of stem cells that became the ultimate gift of life. Today, little Sara is slowly reclaiming her childhood, back to playgrounds, birthday parties, and precious family moments.
On 7 September 2025, Sonia will share her family’s journey at a BMDP event in commemoration of World Leukaemia Day. Her story highlights the urgent need for more marrow donors and seeks to dispel myths surrounding the donation process. Every new donor who joins the registry could give another child, like Sara, the chance to live, grow, and thrive.
