Night Safari Welcomes First Sunda Pangolin Pup in a Decade, Second Birth Expected

Singapore, 17 March 2026 – Night Safari Singapore proudly announces the birth of a critically endangered Sunda pangolin pup, the first in a decade, marking a major milestone in wildlife conservation Singapore. Born on 1 March 2026 to first-time parents Gumby and Radin, the pup represents hope for the survival of one of the world’s most trafficked mammals. Adding to the excitement, another female pangolin, Bawang, is also pregnant, expected to deliver in the coming months.

The arrival of the pangopup highlights the success of Mandai Wildlife Reserve Singapore’s conservation breeding programme, which focuses on maintaining genetic diversity and strengthening managed populations. Keepers have closely monitored Gumby’s health with ultrasound scans, tailored nutrition, and habitat enhancements to ensure a safe environment for mother and pup. At nearly three weeks old, the pup is thriving, clinging naturally to Gumby’s tail, and is about the size of a large avocado.

Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, Deputy CEO and Chief Life Sciences Officer of Mandai Wildlife Group, shared: “These births are more than rare milestones. They provide vital insights into pangolin health, behaviour, and reproduction, advancing conservation efforts both in the wild and under human care.”

Native to Singapore, Sunda pangolins face threats from illegal wildlife trade and urban dangers such as vehicle collisions. Mandai Wildlife Group, through its conservation arm Mandai Nature, supports the National Conservation and Action Plan for the Sunda Pangolin, integrating healthcare, rehabilitation, ex situ breeding, and public awareness campaigns.

Visitors can look forward to seeing Gumby’s pup via a live CCTV feed at Pangolin Trail Night Safari Singapore, with preparations underway for its public debut in April 2026. This milestone reinforces Night Safari’s role as a leader in eco-tourism Singapore, offering unforgettable family-friendly experiences while championing biodiversity protection.
