Sembcorp Marine subsidiary to scheme world’s first zero-emission fuel tanker

This is part of the group’s efforts to spearhead maritime decarbonisation.

One of Sembcorp Marine's wholly-owned subsidiaries, LMG Marin, secured a contract to design the world’s first zero-emission fuel tanker called the MS Green Ammonia.

The vessel will be fuelled by green ammonia and will serve as a dedicated innovation unit of the Grieg Maritime Group. Transportation and distribution of green ammonia fuel from a facility in Berlevåg, Norway, to Svalbard, would be one of its main functions.

Green ammonia, according to the release, is produced with hydrogen from water electrolysis and is powered by renewable energy such as wind and solar. Compared to conventional ammonia, which is manufactured by mixing hydrogen and atmospheric nitrogen under pressure, green ammonia produces no carbon dioxide as a result of its process.

“We appreciate the opportunity to work with Grieg Edge who is at the forefront of developing new business opportunities within the maritime industry with sustainability as a pre-requisite,” said Torbjørn Bringedal, Managing Director, LMG Marin.

Sembcorp Marine President & CEO Wong Weng Sun also stated that the Group’s capabilities in integrated marine and offshore engineering capabilities, deep research and development domain expertise and technological bench strength, would augment LMG Marin’s design work.

This is part of Sembcorp Marine’s efforts since 2015 to undergo a business transformation that highlights renewables and other green solutions.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
