Gov’t enhances code on accessibility in the built environment

The new code will take effect from 1 November 2025.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has updated the Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment, introducing significant improvements for several user groups, such as persons with disabilities, the ageing population, and families with young children.

For wheelchair users, the code will improve barrier-free interconnectivity, and all key building entrances will be wheelchair-accessible.

For the elderly, there will be increased provision of toilet cubicles with grab bars, mandatory resting areas at drop-off areas, and safer ramp designs with colour bands replacing tactile indicators.

Families with young children will have increased provision of lactation rooms in large public buildings and essential fittings such as electrical sockets for breast pumps.

As for persons with visual impairments, the code will have standardised tactile ground surface indicators at stairs to aid navigation.

Meanwhile, persons who are hard-of-hearing will have enhanced signage for the hearing enhancement system.

The new code will take effect from 1 November 2025.
