Lexis® Analytics Malaysia: A Litigation Strategy Powered by AI

Case Analysis Solution Takes Legal Analytics in Malaysia to New Heights.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have been making inroads into almost every field, and not to be left behind, the abundance of use cases in legal practice have drawn increasing attention in recent years. LexisNexis Malaysia seized the opportunity to pioneer this space with the recently launched Lexis® Analytics Malaysia, the very first solution of its kind.

To put it simply, Lexis Analytics Malaysia equips lawyers with a razor-sharp tool that turns a chunk of free text into a carefully curated series of categories containing not just key facts and legal issues but also the cases and legislation that will give them a head start at research and put them on the winning end of the spectrum.

Users need only input their brief, with no need for specific phrasing as with more conventional search tools. Lexis Analytics Malaysia immediately helps identify the most key facts of the case, potential legal issues to be addressed, and accompanying reference notes from case law to legislation, tailored to the appropriate court level and jurisdiction.

The Case Outcome Analysis chart, in addition to helping users pinpoint specific legal issues and relevant further information, also provides percentages of favourable and unfavourable outcomes, all powered by the Malayan Law Journal, a legal database LexisNexis Malaysia has built over the past 89 years. This also helps build a foundational analysis of subsequent judicial treatment, and aids in understanding the authoritative strength of similar cases.

“What we are doing is trying to extract legal knowledge and insights out of the context [of the brief] ... This is beyond the traditional text matching search techniques because we are locating case documents that map to specific legal points which [returns] more accurate results,” said Min Chen, Asia Pacific Chief Technology Officer at LexisNexis.

Lexis Analytics Malaysia also supports litigators in planning ahead, through the Legal Issue Relationship Graph, that illustrates the popularity and rate of occurrence of each issue. It also presents issues that are most likely to be missed, equipping every lawyer with the most comprehensive scan of the legal environment relating to their brief, with just one click.

Global Chief Product Officer, Jamie Buckley, highlighted the importance of keeping local customers at the center of every product launch throughout the 130 countries in which LexisNexis operates, at the LexisNexis Southeast Asia Virtual Conference hosted in conjunction with the launch of the solution on 20 January 2021. Lexis Analytics Malaysia is no different, and customer experience was an integral part of the ‘organic innovation’, as described by Min Chen.

Despite legal analytics being new to the Southeast Asia legal landscape, LexisNexis Malaysia has received positive responses towards Lexis Analytics Malaysia. This breakthrough is nothing without credits given to the careful considerations they put in the product based on findings made with customers and practitioners during the discovery phase. One user from Zaid Ibrahim & Co. said the speed at which she was able to extract the relevant facts and legal issues made Lexis Analytics Malaysia a definite time saver. Another respondent from Zul Rafique & Partners lauded the tool’s capability to catch on and find accurate cases useful in her research.

With the help of Lexis Analytics Malaysia, lawyers have more time to work on more cases, and they can clearly see whether a case needs to be taken to trial, further saving them time, effort, and money. Overall, their strategy becomes more effective and their argument stronger, boosting their success rate.

“Launching Lexis Analytics in Malaysia is just the beginning. It is the beginning of an era of analytics in the region,” said Dewi Radin Amir, Senior Director of Product at LexisNexis Southeast Asia.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
