DBS programme helps 50 SMEs advance ESG readiness

It is expected to reach 100 by the end of 2026.

DBS has graduated 50 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from its ESG Ready Programme, with the businesses representing more than 10 sectors in Singapore.

The programme, developed by DBS and Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), helps SMEs and mid-sized companies assess their sustainability position, identify practical measures, and develop action plans.

Since its launch in April 2024, 73 companies have measured and reported their carbon emissions and developed plans to reduce them.

This number is expected to reach 100 by the end of 2026.

The latest cohort comes as more Singapore businesses report being prepared to address sustainability requirements.

According to DBS’ 2026 Business Pulse Check Survey of 730 companies, 49% considered themselves sustainability-ready, up from 33% a year earlier.

More than one in four businesses, however, still said they felt unprepared.

Freshening Industries, a Singapore-based manufacturer of wet wipes and cleaning products behind the Zappy brand, used the programme to review its operations and identify measures to reduce emissions and energy use.

The company installed solar panels, cutting its electricity bills by 50%.

It also electrified part of its vehicle fleet and introduced automation to improve efficiency and reduce energy use.

Another company highlighted was Kingsmen Creatives, which designs exhibitions and corporate interiors.

As clients increasingly included sustainability requirements in tenders and supplier assessments, the company adjusted its project design and delivery processes.

These measures included more responsible sourcing, material reuse, and improved waste management.

Government procurement is also moving towards greater consideration of environmental sustainability, with Singapore aiming to incorporate such considerations into all government procurement by 2028.

Businesses can access government support through initiatives including the Enterprise Sustainability Programme and the Enterprise Financing Scheme – Green and Energy Efficiency Grant.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
