Grab to expand autonomous vehicle fleet to 50 vehicles
It also plans to launch an on-demand, point-to-point AV service in selected Punggol locations.
Grab will expand its autonomous vehicle (AV) fleet in Singapore fivefold to 50 vehicles over the next six months, from its current fleet of 10.
The company will also expand its AV service coverage within Punggol in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Land Transport Authority (LTA), with plans to extend the service to other parts of Singapore subject to regulatory approvals.
The expansion follows the performance of Grab’s initial fleet of 10 WeRide GXR vehicles, which have logged more than 110,000 kilometres of autonomous mileage on Singapore roads and served over 12,000 unique riders. Grab said 99% of riders surveyed would recommend the service.
LTA approved Grab and WeRide to launch Community Rides, an AV shuttle service in Punggol, in January 2026, followed by Public Rides in April.
Grab said more than 1,000 people are on its waitlist for new AV experiences, with riders seeking more locations, direct routes and flexible booking options.
The company, with LTA’s support, is preparing to launch an on-demand, point-to-point AV service across selected Punggol locations, with additional service points expected to be added in the coming months.
“We continue to evolve and build our service by responding to direct feedback from the community, and by drawing on data and technology from our popular ride-hailing business,” said Alex Hungate, president and chief operating officer at Grab. “As a homegrown company deeply rooted in this region, we will introduce AVs in a way that complements our driver network, whilst also unlocking new career pathways for our local workforce.”
Grab is also investing in AV infrastructure, including working with government agencies to establish an AV depot in Punggol.
Its training arm, GrabAcademy, and WeRide have developed training pathways for driver and delivery partners interested in moving into AV-related roles.
To date, 30 Safety Operators have been certified, including six who have also qualified as Remote Operators. Some have progressed into supervisory and trainer positions.
Grab said hundreds of new AV roles will be created as it explores establishing Singapore as a regional centre of excellence for AV localisation and deployment. The company is also developing talent in areas including design, engineering and operations.
The fleet expansion forms part of Grab’s hybrid mobility strategy, which aims to have AVs and human-driven vehicles complement each other to increase network capacity.
Grab said it will continue strengthening its human-driver network through initiatives including fleet electrification partnerships under GrabRentals and GrabCab, as well as vehicle financing through its Car Marketplace.
The company said the expansion is a step towards its goal of deploying thousands of AVs across Southeast Asia by 2030.
