JTC, Kajima pilot autonomous heavy machinery in Jurong
Excavator and compactor trials target 50% fewer skilled operators.
JTC Corporation and Kajima Corporation have launched a pilot project to test autonomous heavy construction equipment at the Jurong Innovation District.
The trial will begin with excavators and compactors at the Bulim Autonomous Yard, JTC’s testing site for autonomous construction machinery.
An operator will assign tasks and set virtual geographic boundaries for each machine, which will then use sensors and artificial intelligence to carry out the work.
The project targets a 50% reduction in the number of skilled operators required, keeping workers away from hazardous operating zones.
The autonomous excavator will use a retrofit system developed by Zurich-based Gravis Robotic.
Meanwhile, the compactor will run on Kajima’s A4CSEL autonomous construction system, its first deployment outside Japan.
JTC and Kajima also plan to explore adding autonomous bulldozers and dump trucks to the trial in 2027.
The pilot is being conducted with the Public Sector Science & Technology Policy & Plans Office and the Housing & Development Board.
