Sembcorp gets conditional approval for 1.3GW electricity imports

Imports of low-carbon electricity are targeted to begin by 2035.

Sembcorp Utilities has received conditional approval from the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to import 1.3 gigawatts of electricity into Singapore.

The company is working with MY Energy Consortium (MYEC), comprising Petronas and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) to source low-carbon electricity from regional and domestic resources.

These include offshore wind power from Vietnam and solar power from Malaysia, the EMA said.

Electricity imports are targeted to begin by 2035.

The consortium will work to secure regulatory approvals from relevant jurisdictions, finalise power purchase agreements with buyers, and obtain financing for the project.

Sembcorp Utilities, MYEC, and PTSC previously signed a joint development agreement in May 2025 during the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
