WHEN THIS SERVICE IS NEEDED

When This Service Is Needed

  • Re-tiling a balcony or patio.
  • Building a new outdoor area in a landed home or condominium.
  • Outdoor tiles are slippery when wet.
  • Waterproofing needed for an exposed outdoor area.
  • Outdoor tiles are cracked or popped from the weather.
WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM

What Causes The Problem

Outdoor tiles work in conditions indoor tiles never see. Direct sun heats the surface through the day, and sudden rain cools it quickly — the expansion and contraction can stress both the tiles and the adhesive, leading to cracks and popped tiles over time. Water is the other constant: rain drives moisture into grout and beneath tiles, and if the waterproofing beneath the outdoor surface is not sound, the damage shows up in the unit below or in the substrate.

Slippery surfaces are a safety issue rather than a structural one. Some tiles that look good indoors become dangerous outdoors when wet, which is why the surface finish of the tile matters as much as its appearance. Outdoor-rated tiles with a suitable slip rating — commonly R11 or above — are the standard recommendation for wet outdoor use.

Outdoor areas also need the floor to fall correctly toward the drain or floor trap. If water pools on the surface instead of draining, it accelerates grout failure and can damage the waterproofing layer beneath.

Our working method

How HMS Handles It

  • Inspection. We check the existing surface, the waterproofing and the drainage.
  • Recommendation. We advise on outdoor-rated, non-slip tiles and the right approach for the area.
  • Surface preparation. Old tiles are removed where needed, the substrate is repaired and waterproofing is applied.
  • Tiling. New tiles are laid with a proper fall toward the drain so water does not pool.
  • Grouting, sealing and handover. The area is grouted, sealed, cleaned and handed over.
  • Workmanship warranty. The work is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty.
  • OPTIONS

    Options

    • Full re-tile. Removing the old outdoor surface, re-waterproofing and laying new tiles.
    • Repair. Replacing cracked or popped outdoor tiles in an otherwise sound area.
    • Waterproofing plus re-tile. For balconies where water penetration is the real problem.
    • Overlay. Outdoor overlay is rarely recommended — the existing surface, drainage and waterproofing all have to be right, and the added height can affect door thresholds. We assess on site and will tell you honestly whether it is an option.

    Common questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which tiles are best for balconies?

Outdoor-rated, non-slip tiles that resist moisture and temperature changes. We advise at assessment.

How do I stop balcony tiles from being slippery?

The surface finish of the tile determines slip resistance — we recommend finishes suited to wet outdoor use.

    Do you waterproof balconies?

Yes — outdoor areas are waterproofed as part of the tiling work.

How long does outdoor tiling take?

A typical balcony can be completed within two to three days, depending on the area and preparation needed.

    Can outdoor tiles be overlaid?

In limited cases, if the existing surface is sound and drainage allows. We confirm on site.

Is the work covered by warranty?

Yes — 12 months on workmanship. Tile product defects are covered by the manufacturer.
