When This Service Is Needed

  • Hollow sound when tapped. Knock the tile with a metallic item — a coin or a key. If it produces a hollow sound, the adhesive between the substrate and the tile has been compromised, loosening its grip.
  • Tenting or bulging tiles. A tell-tale sign is tiles starting to "tent" or bulge, forming a protrusion on the surface.
  • Tiles popping up. In the most serious cases, floor tiles pop up several inches into the air — or wall tiles fall onto the ground. Cover the affected area with cardboard immediately to prevent you from stepping on it directly.
  • Cracks running across tiles. Often a sign of movement beneath the surface.
  • Tiles that move underfoot. If a tile gives slightly when you step on it, the bond is failing.
  • Recent re-tiling with hollow spots. If tiles laid recently sound hollow, the original installation may be at fault.
WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM

What Causes The Problem

Popping tiles happen when the bond between the tile and the substrate fails. The adhesive may have been applied too thinly, or the substrate may not have been clean and level when the tile was laid. Over time, the tile and the screed expand and contract at different rates — particularly in Singapore's climate — and the movement breaks the bond.

Moisture plays a role too. Water seeping through grout lines or from a leaking pipe can weaken the adhesive from below. In some HDB flats, popping tiles have been reported across multiple units, which points to movement in the concrete slab or conditions during the original installation rather than anything the homeowner did.

Once a tile has lifted, it is dangerous to walk on. The area should be covered with cardboard or similar material to prevent you from stepping on it directly, and the affected tiles should be inspected and repaired before the problem spreads.

  • Grouting, cleaning and handover. The repaired area is grouted, cleaned and inspected with you.
  • Workmanship warranty. The repair is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty. Tile product defects are covered by the manufacturer.

    • Localised repair. Suitable when only a few tiles are affected and the surrounding floor is sound.
    • Extended-area replacement. Popping tiles are rarely localised — replacing the extended area is usually the more reliable option.
    • Full re-tile. If the floor has widespread hollow tiles or a failing substrate, a full re-tile may be the practical choice.
    • Re-bonding without hacking. In limited cases, hollow tiles that are still intact can be re-bonded in place with adhesive injection. This is a specialist fix and is not always suitable — we advise on site whether it will hold.
