WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM

What Causes The Problem

Screeding matters because tiles are only as good as the surface beneath them. If the concrete slab is uneven, a tile laid on it will sit at an angle, and the adhesive will be thicker in some places than others. Where the adhesive is too thin, the tile develops hollow spots; where it is too thick, it may crack.

A poor original screed is a common cause of uneven floors. The screed may have been mixed too wet or too dry, applied unevenly, or laid over a contaminated surface. Over time it can also break down — crumbling, dusting or lifting away from the slab, taking the tiles with it.

Moisture affects screed as well. If water is trapped beneath the surface, it can weaken the screed from below and cause tiles to lift. The screed also needs enough time to cure before tiling; tiling too early traps moisture and leads to problems later.

  • Inspection. We check the level and condition of the floor before recommending a screeding approach.
  • Diagnosis and recommendation. We confirm the screed thickness needed and whether the old screed must be removed first.
  • Surface preparation. The floor is cleaned, primed and prepared for the new screed.
  • Screeding. The screed is mixed and applied to the correct level and left to cure — typically about a week for cement screed — before tiling.
  • Tiling and handover. Once the screed is ready, tiles are laid, grouted, cleaned and handed over.
  • Workmanship warranty. The work is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty.

    Options

    • Screed and tile as one job. Recommended when you are re-tiling — the same team prepares the floor and completes the tiling.
    • Screeding only. If you already have a tiler, we can prepare the floor for them.
    • Patch screeding. For localised uneven areas, we can repair the affected sections rather than re-screeding the whole floor.
    • Self-levelling compound. For minor unevenness, a self-levelling compound may be sufficient instead of a full screed. We recommend based on the floor condition.
