INTRODUCTION

Unwanted Facial and Body Hair

Unwanted facial or body hair can be a source of frustration and embarrassment for many, especially for females with hirsutism — a condition that results in excessive hair growth on typically male hair growth areas, such as on the face, chest and back.

Temporary at-home hair removal methods of shaving and tweezing can cause trauma to the skin, which sometimes result in ingrown hairs, irritation, and redness.

EVIDENCE-BASED METHODS

FRAC3 Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works by using a light beam to heat up and damage hair follicles and hair bulbs. New hair growth becomes finer and fewer, eventually stopping permanently over the course of the treatment.

The Fotona FRAC3 hair removal laser is a 1064 nm long pulsed Nd:YAG laser used for permanent hair removal. It delivers high intensity laser pulses in less than 2 ms, short enough to destroy most hair types while avoiding unnecessary damage to the epidermis. Notably, the laser can be adjusted according to the patient’s skin type, hair thickness, hair color as well as depth of hair follicles. It can destroy even the deepest hair follicles on all body areas.

At Veritas, we use the avant-garde Fotona Dynamix Nx which integrates features such as CoolMist™ skin cooling and MatrixView® thermal sensors into the handpieces. These features improve comfort throughout the treatment by cooling the skin more effectively and reduce the risk of injury to the skin.

Comparison of Standard and FRAC3 Laser Hair Removal Treatment

FRAC3 laser hair removal produces 3 times more effective fractional heating of the hair follicles at shorter pulse durations. This translates into higher effective fluence and allows for targeting of deep hair follicles. In addition, FRAC3 results in higher comfort for the patient because of the laser pulse’s smaller spot size compared to standard hair removal protocols.

Differences between IPL and Laser Hair Removal

Unlike IPL, laser hair removal allows targeted focusing on a concentrated area – this means we are able to remove hair with much higher efficacy and without damaging surrounding skin. For those with deeper skin tones, this precision of laser hair removal is key to avoid any hyperpigmentation common with IPL treatments.

Clinical trials have shown that long pulsed Nd:YAG laser resulted in long-term hair removal efficacy whereas scientific evidence for long-term hair removal is lacking for hair removal with IPL. A comparison of side effects between laser hair removal with Nd:YAG vs IPL hair removal showed that in darker skinned individuals (Fitzpatrick skin types IV – VI), 45% of those who had hair removal with IPL developed postinflammatory hyperpigmentation whereas 0% of whose who were treated with Nd:YAG laser developed hyperpigmentation on the skin.

Most patients can expect a significant permanent reduction of unwanted hair in the treated areas with our Frac3 long-pulsed laser hair removal treatment. Bear in mind that results can vary depending on factors such as the patient’s skin type and hair type. The doctor will address these concerns and discuss the expected results with you during the consultation.

"It is common to see dark marks/hyperpigmentation as a result of shaving or IPL treatments, especially if you have a deeper skin tone. The Starwalker pico laser, a non-ablative pigmentation laser, is usually used in combination to laser removal to remove these pigments across multiple layers of the skin."

What Preparation Do I need for Laser Hair Removal?

Plan Your Schedule to Ensure You Are Able to Accommodate Treatment at Regular Intervals.
When it comes to laser hair removal, adhering to a fixed interval of 4-6 weeks apart between each treatment is crucial for effective removal. This is because hair grows in three different phases but only hairs in the first phase (Anagen phase) can be effectively targeted by laser. Not all hair on our body are in the same phase at any given time, which means not not all hair can be effectively targeted in one laser session. When regular treatment intervals are not spaced correctly or adhered to, hairs that are in the wrong phase would be missed out, requiring more subsequent laser hair removal sessions to target the hairs that are missed. It is thus important to plan ahead and ensure your schedule allows for treatment at the intervals advised by your doctor.

Avoid Hair Removal Before or In Between Treatments

The root of the hair has to be present in order for laser to target the hair during laser hair removal treatment. Therefore, any action that removes the hair roots, such as plucking, tweezing, waxing or epilating must be strictly avoided before laser hair removal treatment or in between laser treatments. Only shaving should be done during the course of treatment.

Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure Before and After Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Exposure to sunlight is an important precaution before laser hair removal, as doing so can cause the skin to become more sensitive to light energy during the hair removal treatment and put one at higher risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is recommended to avoid excessive sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before the treatment.

After laser hair removal treatment, direct sunlight should continue to be avoided for two weeks due to temporary increased skin photosensitivity after treatment. A sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher should be worn outdoors.

Do Not Apply Skincare Products On The Day of Treatment

It is recommended for patients to come in for laser hair removal treatment with skin that is free of moisturisers, lotions or serums that creates a barrier between the laser and targeted hair. For those getting hair removal done on the underarms, this includes avoiding deodorant.
