Cherry Angiomas

While there is no exact known cause of cherry angiomas, the following factors are found to have an association with the development of cherry angiomas:

• Ageing
  There is a strong correlation between cherry angiomas and age. Cherry angiomas increase in numbers and size with age, with over half of middle-aged adults developing cherry angiomas after age 30. An estimated 75% of people over the age of 75 develop a marked increase in cherry angiomas. While less common, cherry angiomas can also appear in young people.
• Pregnancy
  Cherry angiomas are reported to be associated with pregnancy and can appear both during pregnancy and postpartum due to elevated prolactin hormones.
• Genetics
  Certain genetic analysis has found cherry angiomas to be more prevalent in those with GNA14 mutation, a mutation that causes vascular tumours.
• Sun Exposure
  While the mechanism behind how UV exposure leads to cherry angioma development is unclear, studies have suggested that UV can induce angiogenesis by upregulating vascular endothelial growth factor and downregulating endogenous angiogenesis inhibitor.

Cherry angioma can look similar to other red spots on the body and is sometimes confused with other vascular lesions. Here are some key differences and ways to distinguish them.

The Pro Yellow laser is an effective treatment modality for removing cherry angiomas without scarring or pigmentation risks. Other vascular lasers, including the pulsed dye laser, may also be used to treat cherry angiomas, depending on the size, depth and characteristics of the lesion. Following laser treatment, it is normal for the treated cherry angioma lesion to temporarily darken in colour, turning purplish or black, before being gradually resorbed by the body and clearing up within 1-2 weeks.

For most small cherry angiomas, complete removal can be achieved after a single laser session while bigger lesions require multiple sessions.

While harmless, some individuals may choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons or if the cherry angiomas become irritated, bleed, or increase in size.
