Emotionally-focused therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach designed to strengthen attachment and bonding in adult relationships. Rooted in attachment theory, EFT helps couples and individuals reconnect by addressing the emotional patterns that cause distress and distance. By fostering secure emotional bonds, EFT enables partners to build a more supportive, responsive and lasting relationship.

At Sofia Wellness Clinic, our experienced therapists use EFT to guide you through this transformative process, helping you restore emotional connections and improve communication for a healthier, more fulfilling relationship. We offer Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) to address the unique needs of individuals, couples and families.
How Does Emotionally-Focused Therapy Work?
EFT places emotional experiences at the heart of therapy. Rooted in attachment theory, EFT emphasises the importance of emotional connections with others as a source of safety, comfort and personal growth.
EFT helps people recognise and break negative interaction patterns linked to attachment fears – such as the fear of loss or rejection. With guidance from our professional therapists, you can learn to express your vulnerabilities and attachment needs openly, using these emotions to foster intimacy and closeness rather than emotional distance. This approach will enable you to rebuild stronger, more supportive relationships and navigate life’s challenges together with your loved ones.
Issues That Emotionally-Focused Therapy Can Help With

- Alienation and feelings of irreparability in relationships
- Infidelity and trauma in relationships
- Difficulty expressing emotions or fear of vulnerability
- Conflict and poor communication in couples
- Dealing with addiction, chronic illness or PTSD
- Trouble regulating emotions and intense reactivity
- Intense anger, fear, grief, or loss of trust
- Sense of betrayal
3 Stages of Emotionally-Focused Therapy
EFT involves 3 main stages, each designed to strengthen emotional bonds and improve communication between partners.
1. De-Escalation
In the first stage, the focus is on identifying and reducing negative interaction patterns that fuel conflict.
After understanding the couples’ history, the therapist will closely observe their interaction patterns. Through observation, listening and questioning, the therapist uncovers the unspoken fears and insecurities that could drive negative interaction patterns.
Couples then begin to understand how insecurities and fears impact their relationship. The therapist helps partners see behaviours like shutting down or escalating anger as response to disconnection. Through guided sessions, such emotional reactivity is de-escalated, allowing couples to become more emotionally available, empathetic and engaged with each other.
2. Restructuring
The second stage focuses on deepening emotional connections. Partners learn to share their vulnerabilities and express deep emotions, which helps to reduce conflict and create a more secure bond.
The therapist plays an active role, helping partners reframe negative behaviours as misguided attempts to connect. This process fosters a sense of security, allowing partners to support and comfort each other, and to grow both individually and as a couple.
3. Consolidation
In the final stage, couples work on solidifying new communication strategies and interaction patterns. Old, negative patterns are replaced with new, positive cycles of interaction, creating a lasting change.
With their mutual support system reestablished, couples are encouraged to revisit old or ongoing issues to develop new solutions. They practice staying connected and offering comfort during challenges, gaining insight into the underlying emotional needs that once triggered negative behaviours. The relationship becomes a safe haven where both partners can continue to grow and support each other.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emotionally Focused Therapy
What should I expect in an EFT session?
In an EFT session, you can expect a collaborative, supportive environment where our therapists help you explore your emotional experiences and the dynamics of your relationship. We will work together to identify negative interaction patterns and learn new ways to respond to each other with empathy and openness. Sessions may involve individual and couple-specific exercises to help build trust and emotional safety.
How is EFT different from other types of therapy?
Unlike other therapies that focus solely on cognitive changes or behaviour modification, EFT focuses on emotions as the key to lasting change. We help you understand the emotional root causes of your distress and work on creating emotional responsiveness, which fosters deeper connections and healthier relationship patterns.
How do I know if EFT is right for me?
If you’re struggling with relationship challenges, emotional distance, or negative communication patterns, EFT can be a great option. It’s also beneficial if you’re seeking to deepen your emotional connections, work through past trauma, or learn how to respond to your emotions in healthier ways. A consultation with one of our therapists can help you determine if EFT is the right fit for your needs.
